What is Lacrosse?
Lacrosse is a dynamic, energetic and exciting sport that leaves no one indifferent! It is a game where ten players, including the goalkeeper, play on the field at the same time, and the main task is to score a goal using a special stick to carry a rubber ball and accurately hit the opponent’s goal.
In women’s lacrosse, the match lasts 60 minutes, divided into four parts of 15 minutes each, and in men’s lacrosse, 80 minutes, divided into four periods of 20 minutes each. Despite the fact that the rules of men’s and women’s lacrosse have several differences, it is these nuances that create the unique character of each game. The men’s version has more physical contact, which requires additional protective measures and strategic thinking, while the women’s version emphasizes technique, strategy, and the ability to predict the course of events.

The history of lacrosse is rooted in the tradition of North American Indians, where the game is known as “buggatawe”. This game was originally played by the Iroquois peoples in the New York and southern Ontario region. Some tribes enjoyed this game, gathering up to a thousand players on one field, with entire fields located at a great distance, and matches could last for several days! Players tried to knock down as many opponents as possible with their sticks, and then concentrated on achieving the main goal – scoring a goal.
For many tribes, this game was not only a sport, but also a sacred ceremony, accompanied by complex rituals and ceremonial dances. Annual competitions turned into real battles, where all disputes and debts accumulated during the year between hostile tribes were resolved.

The name “lacrosse” originated from the shape of the device used by players to catch, move and throw the ball – the first French settlers in Canada called it “la crosse” (i.e., “the stick”). Europeans began playing lacrosse around 1840, and the first organization dedicated to the sport was founded in Montreal in 1842.
Today, lacrosse is becoming increasingly popular among both young people and adults due to its unique combination of physical strength, strategic thinking, and sophisticated technique. This sport teaches teamwork, quick decision-making and mutual assistance, as each player is essential in achieving a common goal. If you are looking for an activity that energizes and gives you an unforgettable experience, lacrosse is for you!
